Journalism Newsdays

Our Journalism students are currently completing News Days as part of their programme. Each Tuesday from 10:00am - 4:00pm, you can tune in to Yorkshire Voice on YouTube for hourly bulletins from our students.

The News Days simulate a real newsroom environment where students need to source and research a story, before writing, shooting and producing it.

And from 17 April, you’ll be able to hear our students live on BCB Radio in Bradford delivering the hourly news bulletin update for two weeks.

RTS Careers Fair

Students from the School of Digital and Screen Media travelled to London to participate in The Royal Television Society (RTS) Careers Fair.

Throughout the day, our students had the opportunity to meet the teams from companies such as Banijay Entertainment (Big Brother), BBC Scripted (Dr Who), Channel 4, IMG Studios (Premier League), ITV Studios, NBCUniversal (Despicable Me), Studio Lambert (Squid Game: The Challenge) and many more.

Employability is at the heart of the School of Digital and Screen Media, and this event presented a unique opportunity for our students to gain insights into the various career paths on offer in the creative industries.

Brownberrie Gallery launch

The photography space, located on our Main Campus, has been named The Brownberrie Gallery.

To celebrate the launch, our final year Photography students launched Visions of Work – a new exhibition co-produced with documentary photographer Ian Beesley.

Visions of Work marks the start of the 24/25 programme of exhibitions, with second year students delivering an assessed exhibition in March and final year students delivered their final exhibition on Wednesday 30 April as part of the End of Year Faculty Degree Show.

Writers' Festival

On Wednesday, 5 March, the School celebrated the 20th anniversary of our annual Writers’ Festival.

The event welcomes students, staff and members of the public together to take part in workshops provided by experienced writers and poets. It’s an opportunity to network with like-minded writers, be inspired and celebrate the craft of writing.

Alice's IRN Award

Leeds Trinity University alumna Alice Young has been named National Newsreader of the Year at the Commercial Radio News Awards for the second time.

Alice, who graduated from Leeds Trinity with a Master’s in Journalism in 2020, now works as a Senior Broadcast Journalist for Global in their London newsroom. She features across a range of their platforms but is most commonly heard delivering morning news bulletins on Heart Breakfast, the UK’s biggest commercial radio breakfast show, and presenting on LBC News. 

Alice Young said: “I am beyond thrilled to have been named National Newsreader of the Year. It is an honour and a privilege to be part of Heart Breakfast and a joy to wake people up with the news in London and across the UK.

“I am so grateful for the training I received at Leeds Trinity University, setting me up to do my dream job. The skills I developed and everything I learned from the wonderful teaching team are a huge part of the journalist I am today, and I fondly look back on my memories there. The course gave me a great grounding in all areas of journalism, and I believe studying in Leeds provided me with the opportunity to jump straight into a role in radio, having started in news reading before I even finished my course.”

Praise at RTS Awards

Four films produced by Leeds Trinity University students were recognised at the Royal Television Society Yorkshire Student Awards, with an alumnus scooping up two awards for his cinematography and editing.

BA Film graduate Elian Beaumont scooped two prestigious RTS Yorkshire Student Awards at a glittering ceremony on Wednesday 5 March. 

Elian was honoured with two special Craft Awards for Cinematography and Editing for his films Find Me  and Belonging, respectively. This follows his success at last year’s RTS Yorkshire Student Awards and The Graddies Student Film Awards. 

Judges also praised Television Production students Harry Tombling and Fraser Whur, who came second in the Saving The Planet category, which focuses on films about environmental issues, with their film Nature’s Holme.

The pair made the seven-minute documentary, which tells the story of a rewilding project by volunteers in West Yorkshire, as part of their Level 5 Documentary module. 

Broadcast Journalism student Theo Darvill was also shortlisted in the Factual: Short Form category for his documentary film Slanky – Whatever You Want It To Be, about a lifestyle brand, which he filmed and edited in his second year at Leeds Trinity.

Oz's national poetry prize

Oz Hardwick, Professor of Creative Writing at Leeds Trinity, has been awarded the 2024 Charles Simic Poetry Prize for his poem “Witness Statement”.

Established in memory of the acclaimed Serbian American poet, the prize celebrates poetry that, while strikingly individual, enters the territory in which surrealism and visceral physicality coexist within the rules of their own uneasy logic.
