Although I’ve had ambitions to get published since a young age, my English lecturers and dissertation supervisor were always inspiring and their feedback motivated me to keep on writing after university.

Inspiring modules that led to me being published

During my time at Leeds Trinity, I did a few modules on really interesting topics that appealed to me personally, such as an English Literature module on Vampire Fiction, ‘Authors in Depth’ (involving studies on Oscar Wilde and Virginia Woolf), and a Film module on Science Fiction. These classes encouraged me to pursue writing; my short story that was published in Harvey Duckman 7 (under a pen name) was originally my submission for the Science Fiction module!

I’ve also been writing articles on film and television for 25YL and Horror Obsessive, one of which was a sort of continuation of my dissertation idea (the issue of consent in Buffy the Vampire Slayer).

Ongoing inspiration

My advice for aspiring authors

For other aspiring authors, I’d recommend keeping a look out for the Leeds Trinity anthology publications - that’s great practise for writing and submitting your work, plus the staff and other writers are all super supportive!

As long as you stick to writing about things that interest and excite you, that will keep you motivated and in love with stories.
