Mind the Gap

Mind the Gap is a full-length feature film written, produced and directed by Associate Professor Ricardo Barker. It is the latest film of many by multi-award-winning filmmaker Ricardo.  It is a sharp, reflective drama that explores an often-overlooked issue of unconscious bias within higher education.

Over the course of a year, led by Syra Shakir, Associate Professor and strategic lead race equity, a co-creation group of staff and students from Leeds Trinity gathered research exploring the awarding gap at universities from across the UK. This underpins the film using the powerful medium of storytelling.

The film and associated resources provide a creative and targeted approach to addressing the wicked problem of the awarding gap at university. The film and training materials can support universities to develop different ways of working to support students to develop a sense of belonging and succeed in higher education.  We cover a range of research-informed topics and tried and tested interventions from curriculum design and decolonising, pastoral support, personal tutoring, mental health and well-being, coaching and mentoring and more. 

How is it delivered?

Flexible delivery options ranging from a half-day option to a two-day block. These can be online or in person. 

Either face-to-face on site at the booking organisation’s premises, or online.  Around two hours of non-contact learning for each individual is also needed.

Dates and times for sessions are set in agreement with the booking organisation.

Who should attend?

This training is suitable for a wide range of audience participants such as management, executives, leaders, staff teams, student learners and apprentices.

The training is customised according to the needs of the business/organisation. The training is available for schools, universities, educational organisations, the public, private and charitable sectors both within the UK and internationally.
