Almost every aspect of the world around us is branded, packaged and marketed, making marketing an essential part of business operations.

You'll be at the forefront of the latest developments in business and marketing on this course, with theory brought to life through current case studies and real-life examples.

This four-year course includes an initial full-time Foundation Year and offers an alternative route into university and gaining a degree.

This route is for you if you do not have the necessary qualifications or don’t yet feel ready to begin degree-level study, or are returning to education and would like some support to get up to speed with learning in a university setting.

The Foundation Year in Business will allow you to develop your academic skills and confidence as well as introduce you to key concepts, debates and skills that will support and inform your subsequent years of undergraduate study.

Following successful completion of your Foundation Year, you’ll progress onto Year 1 of our Business and Marketing BA (Hons) degree.

About this course

During your Foundation Year, you will undertake modules to enable you to enhance your academic skills and equip you with the tools you’ll need to study with confidence. 

You'll be introduced to the skills necessary for effective business analysis and consultancy. You'll learn the essential of business, looking at how businesses operate and are managed, and explore how enterprise and innovation help to shape sustainable businesses.

Following successful completion of the Foundation Year, you’ll progress onto the first year of our Business and Marketing BA (Hons) degree.

Study the fundamental principles of business and marketing, learn how to conduct market audits, identify your target market and carry out competitor analysis.

You'll explore the marketing communications mix and come up with strategies for communications campaigns and product launches.

Discover how advances in technology transform the way businesses operate and work on digital strategies for reaching audiences.

You'll develop the analytical and research skills employers look for, as well as crucial soft skills such as collaboration and how to present effectively.

Foundation Year

During your Foundation Year, you will study four core modules.

Academic Skills and Studying with Confidence - Core

We'll help you develop core academic skills such as using electronic resources, planning and note-taking, communication skills related to essay and report writing and delivering presentations.

You'll learn to manage your time, prioritise tasks and manage stress, and become more confident in engaging with collaborative learning, debates, discussions and critical reflection.

Business Analysis and Consultancy - Core

Develop the foundational skills necessary for effective business analysis and consultancy with a focus on practical application and team collaboration.

You'll first be introduced to the concepts of business analysis where you'll cover analytical tools and techniques aiming to equip you with the skills to understand and apply statistical data in business decision-making processes. You'll also enhance your numeracy skills, learn to interpret numerical data and basic statistics.

You'll have the opportunity to apply your skills in a real-world context through a live business brief from an external business and partake in a group assignment involving a project proposal to be presented to the business partner.

Essentials of Business - Core

You'll be given an extensive overview of how businesses operate and are managed. 

Build a broad understanding necessary for specialised study in business and develop the knowledge of the key terminologies and concepts used in business.

You'll cover structure, culture and governance in the business organisation. Develop your knowledge of the business environments and issues around ethics, sustainability and responsible business practices.

Explore topics including the overview of business functions such as marketing, accounting and operations, as well as management theories and practices, the global economic environment and business ethics.

 

Enterprise and Innovation - Core

Explore the pivotal role of creativity and innovation in shaping sustainable businesses and delve into the various dimensions that foster innovation from organisational culture to the entrepreneurial mindset, equipping you with the knowledge and skills to thrive in dynamic business environments.

Gain an insight into how creativity and innovation serve as key drivers for business sustainability. You'll cover the importance of innovative cultures, behaviours, structures, systems, procedures and policies that support continuous innovation within corporate organisations.

Investigate the concept of entrepreneurship beyond the act of starting a business, focusing on how entrepreneurial activities contribute to economic wealth and social value. You'll encompass individual, corporate and social entrepreneurship, highlighting the diverse impact of entrepreneurial ventures.

Year 1

During your first year, you will study four core modules.

Principles of Accounting and Finance - Core

You’ll be introduced to the financial markets and institutions, exploring fintech, digital finance, payment systems and alternative finance.

Learn about the types of business organisations, the role of stakeholders, and how regulatory and non-regulatory factors affect businesses.

Measure financial position, financial performance analysis and report cash flows as well as analyse and interpret financial statements using key financial ratios.

You’ll focus on developing your accounting and financial skills, application of theory, including problem solving, consequence chain analysis, measurement of performance, assessment of viability and action planning.

People and Organisations - Core

You’ll study the nature and complexity of organisations and be introduced to the functional specialism of people management.

You’ll be encouraged to compare different approaches to management theory, such as Taylor/Fordism and Human Relations, as groundwork for future studies.

Class-based exercises will take you through topics such as leadership, motivation, group formation, behaviour, change, and the international implications of people management.

Marketing Fundamentals - Core

You will get a basic introduction to the marketing environment, marketing management, and the role of marketing in the world.

You will look at the impact of a customer-centred approach, marketing research, market analysis, segmentation, targeting and positioning theory and practice.

You will also study marketing mix elements such as product, price, promotion and place, how service and retail marketing works in theory and practice, and the impact of technological developments like e-commerce.

Globalisation and Social Justice - Core

You’ll develop a critical understanding of the two broad phenomena of globalisation and social justice. You will be inspired by Leeds Trinity University’s strategic themes, exploring subjects related to poverty, human rights infringements, inequalities and other social justice-related issues.

You’ll study theoretical debates on globalisation and social justice in the current business environment, responding to current events in both lectures and workshops.

Year 2

During your second year, you will study four core modules.

Professional Development and Placement - Core

You'll prepare career and study plans, find out how to search for job opportunities and experience a typical graduate trainee assessment centre recruitment process.

In workshops, you'll analyse your professional development and personality and learn the importance of teamwork and effective interpersonal relationships.

You'll develop graduate-level employability skills through reflective learning and self-directed study.

Global Business Environment - Core

You’ll explore the interplay between ethics, law and economics in the global marketplace, in which you’ll gain a comprehensive understanding of organisations’ various challenges and opportunities when operating in a global context.

You’ll delve into the ethical considerations that organisations must take into account when making decisions, such as questions of social responsibility, corporate governance, and human rights.

You’ll study the economic landscape of the global market, including macroeconomic conditions, trade patterns, and the role of multinational corporations where you’ll develop a strong understanding of the economic forces that shape the global business environment and how to position yourself to succeed in the dynamic and challenging market.

Business Research and Analytics - Core

You’ll develop the fundamental knowledge and skills needed to carry out primary and secondary research and to analyse and present findings and conclusions.

You’ll acquire a comprehensive understanding of the principles underpinning the research process, and the tools required to carry out key research tasks.

You’ll study the fundamentals of scientific inquiry, ethical considerations in research, strengths and weaknesses of different data collection methods, and basic methods of quantitative and qualitative data collection.

Integrated Marketing Communications - Core

You’ll be encouraged to explore the essential brand relationship between organisations and their audiences, the application of rationale and cognitive communication strategies used to engage and influence audience perceptions.

Be equipped with practical knowledge of marketing communication tools such as advertising, public relations and direct marketing and the deployment of these tools in conventional and digital media environments.

Year 3

During your final year, you will study two core modules and will be required to choose two option modules.

Strategic Marketing - Core

You’ll be introduced to an advanced strategic marketing planning theory and models, understanding their application in the deployment of an organisation’s resources to achieve optimum competitive advantage.

You’ll cover dimensions of strategic marketing planning, including micro-macro situational analysis to inform key marketing objectives and enable strategic planning decisions related to product price, place and promotion.

Professional Learning and Practice - Core

You’ll be encouraged to link with external organisations and businesses to source a work-related project within your chosen area of interest enabling you to develop employability skills in the context of your chosen career path.

You’ll enhance essential skills in business and sector awareness, as well as effective interpersonal communication alongside practical elements involved in the negotiation and management of projects.

International Marketing - Option

Analysing theoretical developments in international marketing, you'll gain an advanced understanding of international consumers and their needs.

You'll study international environmental analysis and information sources, market entry strategies such as exporting and importing, and the operational aspects of international marketing practice.

You will analyse national and organisational culture as a factor in international marketing, international trade and development, and ethical issues in international marketing.

Creative Entrepreneurship and Innovation - Option

You’ll develop entrepreneurial mindsets and introduce them to the main frameworks related to processes, strategies and sources of innovation as well as new trends in innovation.

You’ll learn about the role of creativity in problem-solving and the application of design thinking to different business tasks.

Contemporary Issues in Sustainability - Option

You’ll learn the importance of sustainability in contemporary business operations and acquire the specific skills, tools and techniques of sustainability assessment and understand the significance of sustainability practices.

You’ll be introduced to sustainability in general, and the various sustainability issues and practices relevant to business operations, including the benefits and challenges of adopting sustainability practices, the role of stakeholders, the supply chain and corporate social responsibility.

Project Management - Option

You'll explore project management, including tools required for professional planning, implementing projects, evaluating the associated benefits and costs, and managing risk and uncertainty.

You'll address the challenges of project organisation structures and resource scheduling.

You'll develop a project plan, encouraging you to discover the principles of stakeholder/client management and learn how to build effective project teams and leadership skills.

We aim to deliver a realistic baseline of skills expected in the workplace through a nurturing and supportive project-based environment.

Research Project - Option

You'll cover key topics in social science research, including problem definition, conducting a literature review and methodology.

You'll practise writing a research report, focussing on format, presentation of findings and discussion including academic conventions within the subject specialism.

Professional work placements

Experience matters. That's why we embed professional work placements within the majority of our standard undergraduate degrees.

How does it work?

Careers and Placements will work with you to find a placement or help you to arrange your own, whether that's in Leeds, another part of the UK or even abroad. You will be able to take part in a series of workshops, events and live ‘employer challenges’ to boost your confidence and prepare you for your placement.

During your placement, you could have an opportunity to gain degree-relevant work experience, build your knowledge of career sectors and secure valuable employer references and industry contacts. This experience will help you to shape your career decisions and find the right path for you.

You’ll gain relevant work experience through your professional placements. Recent students have completed placements at Leeds-based digital company twentysix, Jet2, Marie Curie, Morrisons, Arc Inspirations, Halifax Town FC and Think Pacific.

Programme delivery

Your time on campus, learning through in-person teaching, is at the heart of your academic experience and the way we deliver our programmes. This is supported and further enhanced by additional engagement activities and opportunities provided online and through digital teaching materials. This blended approach seeks to ensure a positive learning and teaching student experience.

Your programme of study has been carefully designed around a three-phase model of delivery:

  1. Preparation: You will be given clear tasks to support you in preparing for live teaching. This could include watching a short-pre-recorded lecture, reading a paper or text chapter or preparing other material for use in class.
  2. Live: All your live teaching will be designed around active learning, providing you with valuable opportunities to build on preparation tasks, interact with staff and peers, and surface any misunderstandings.
  3. Post: Follow-up activities will include opportunities for you to check understanding, for staff to receive feedback from you and your peers to inform subsequent sessions, and for you to apply learning to new situations or context.

Preparation, Live and Post teaching and learning and the digital materials used will vary by course, but will be designed to help you structure your learning, take a full and active part in your course, and apply and test your developing knowledge and skills.

Tuition fees cost £9,250 a year for this course in 2024/2025.

Part-time tuition fees will be prorated accordingly to the number of credits you're studying.

Depending on government policy, tuition fees may change in future years.

Tuition fees for 2025/2026 entry will be confirmed, subject to government approval, later in 2024.

Living costs, e.g. accommodation, travel, food, will also need to be taken into consideration.

Leeds Trinity offers a range of bursaries and scholarships to help support students while you study.

Additional costs

We advise students that there may be additional course costs in addition to annual tuition fees. These include:

  • Books - recommended and required reading lists will be provided at the start of your course. All the books and e-books are available from our Library to borrow but you may choose to purchase your own.
  • Print costs - the University provides students with a £6 printing credit each academic year which can be topped up either on campus or online.
