Computer Science student Brandon Willock is the first Leeds Trinity University student ever to study in South Korea as part of his degree.

20-year-old Brandon from Halifax is currently spending a semester at Sogang University in Seoul. He'll study modules on data communications, operating systems and Java programming during his three months study abroad semester.

"Korea is a well-economically developed country with high interests in technology, computers, IT and programming, so it was natural that I wanted to be in the heart of the land of technology," said Brandon, who landed in Seoul on Sunday 25 August.

"I've only been here a few days but have already gotten used to the surrounds, public transport and people. The locals are helpful, friendly and polite, and they understand, read and can speak English too, which is a bonus!"

As well as studying in South Korea, Brandon will have the opportunity to travel and see more of the country. He's most looking forward to learning more about the culture and history of South Korea.

He said: "Every time I've been on holiday it has been to a country in south east Asia, so I took this opportunity to immerse myself into that life even more. I'd love to work in Asia, probably China or Korea, after graduating."

Brandon is currently in his second year of a three-year Computer Science degree at Leeds Trinity University.

Sorrel Harriet, Lecturer in Computer Science at Leeds Trinity University, said: "Studying in South Korea offers Brandon a unique opportunity to gain experience working across cultures, which is important given the tech industry is a global industry. I'm positive that he'll learn a lot during the semester and I'm looking forward to hearing all about it."

Brandon received £1,500 from the University's Inspiring Futures Programme to support his study abroad semester.

The next round of applications for study abroad closes on Monday 30 September, for students wanting to study abroad from January 2020.
