On Thursday 27 June, the Institute of Childhood and Education at Leeds Trinity University will host its 2019 NQT and Early Career Teacher Conference - 'Career Illuminations'.

The one-day conference welcomes newly qualified and early career teachers to participate in a range of workshops and exhibitions. The conference will support career progression, showcase invigorating ideas within education and provide NQTs with an opportunity to network with like-minded professionals.

The workshops will be delivered by practitioners with a wealth of experience across teaching, education and well-being, encouraging attendees to build expertise, explore career progression routes and develop techniques to maintain a healthy work life balance and avoid burnout.

Presenter, educationalist and author Hywel Roberts is keynote speaker for the event. Hywel's best-selling titles include 'Oops! Getting Children to Learn Accidentally' and 'Unchartered Territories' (with Debra Kidd). He will also be leading a workshop on teachers-as-writers, sharing his experience beyond the classroom and encouraging teachers to participate in national debates and educational publications.

Hannah Collins, Assistant Head at Royds School in Leeds, will lead a workshop on the psychological challenges of teaching and identify strategies to manage stress in an ever-changing landscape.

Hannah, who has worked in education for the last decade, said: "From my very first step inside the classroom, I was hooked. I realised that education is a powerful tool to improve the life chances of young people and I haven't looked back."

She added: "My workshop will help teachers to balance the achievable and the desirable, reminding them that you cannot give from an empty cup. Teaching is hard work, but I will help NQTs to work smart and to strive for that elusive work life balance we hear so much about!"

Charlotte Wright, Senior Lecturer in the Institute of Childhood and Education, said:

"We are delighted to be welcoming NQTs and Early Career Teachers to this event. This is an ideal opportunity to invest in new areas of specialist knowledge, such as BAME provision, steps into SENCO work, or supporting PP students - both for personal intellectual development, and for career benefits and school enrichment. I'm especially looking forward to catching up with Leeds Trinity graduates at the start of their teaching careers."

The conference will run from 9.30am - 3.30pm on Thursday 27 June. It is £30 for Leeds Trinity graduates and £50 for all other NQT and early career teachers. More information about the workshops can be viewedhere.
