Focused on pursuing her aim of joining a police force, Sabina chose to join the course so she could develop her practical skills while broadening her theoretical understanding of criminology. 

Sabina has also had a unique opportunity to complete a placement as a Special Constable with the North Yorkshire Police. Starting in 2021 and concluding in June of this year, Sabina gained valuable insight into modern policing, working on a wide range of cases including criminal damage, missing persons, road traffic collisions and more. The experience has not only improved her confidence and widened her network but has made her more determined to join the police than ever before.
 
Sabina said: “Every job I attended allowed me to learn from experienced individuals who cared about my input and allowed me to play a part in incidents that we’d attend. I'm really proud to have met and worked alongside such caring and hardworking people, each one has been an inspiration to me and are a credit to North Yorkshire Police.  

“I was very lucky in securing the placement as without the Careers+Placements team at Leeds Trinity sending me the link to the job advert, I wouldn't have seen it. Whilst my goal has long since been to join the police, I've been able to experience what it is truly like earlier than most and I owe huge thanks for that to the University.” 

Her three-year course, which she graduates from with a 2:1, allowed her to explore specific areas of policing, which has helped her to decide which career path she would like to follow. She now hopes to join the Police on a Degree Holder Entry Programme (DHEP), a two-year work-based training programme. Beyond that, she plans to work towards becoming a Detective before moving into counter terrorism. 

Robert Hornsby, Associate Professor (Research) in Criminology and Sabina’s personal tutor, said: “Sabina has been a dedicated and committed student throughout the time I have been fortunate enough to work alongside and teach her. Sabina’s many strengths include her willingness to push herself to acquire understanding of complex criminological issues, and her confidence to ask the necessary questions when she isn’t sure.  

“Open-minded and enthusiastic, disciplined and hardworking, Sabina was an outstanding student, and I am very confident that she will have a bright and successful future ahead of her.” 

Alongside her studies, Sabina has worked as a student ambassador, representing Leeds Trinity at UCAS events, subject focus days and school visits. “It has been so rewarding to be able to have a positive influence on those younger people and encourage them to follow their interests,” Sabina added.
