Alex secured a job promotion with Britain’s national regulator for workplace health and safety while completing her Chartered Manager Apprenticeship at Leeds Trinity University.

Alex, originally from York, is an Administrative Team Leader in the Pesticide Operational Support Team, Chemical Regulations Division at the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), a role she secured while studying at Leeds Trinity University. The HSE is the national regulator for workplace health and safety, ensuring people feel safe where they live and work and in their environment.

The Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship allowed Alex to link academic theory to the objectives of the company. Alex’s work-based projects at Level 5 and 6 had a measurably positive impact on the HSE, enabling the business to complete management-aligned processes, such as monitoring performance and supporting business planning and development.

Sarah Frow, Head of Pesticide Operational Support Team, Chemical Regulations Division at the HSE, said: “As Alex’s mentor for the final year of her degree, I have seen her confidence grow in areas of leadership and analytical ability. Alex’s final-year degree project has supported the organisation in drawing out key management information in delivery areas previously unexplored. This has allowed recognition and measures to be applied to the organisation whilst using the most up-to-date technology. I would not hesitate to recommend managers/heads of team to encourage individuals to complete this degree to build development and capability in leadership and management.”

Clare Dodsley, Work Based Learning Tutor at Leeds Trinity University said: “Alex worked at a consistently high level throughout the apprenticeship, she hadn’t completed any previous higher education courses but was able to quickly link academic theory to the objectives of the business. During her time on the apprenticeship, Alex achieved a promotion and naturally her line management skills developed alongside her networking and collaboration with internal and external stakeholders. We are so proud of Alex for being a finalist of the West Yorkshire Apprenticeship Awards.”

The Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship is designed to provide the essential knowledge, understanding and skills required to operate successfully in a business environment.
