A Journalism graduate has described Leeds Trinity University’s practical learning opportunities as “invaluable” after securing a job with ITV News just one year after opting to make a major career change.
Rajveer (Raj) Kaur had spent over 20 years working in digital marketing and data analytics in the travel industry prior to starting the MA Journalism programme in Leeds Trinity University’s Centre for Journalism, home to the top-ranked Journalism provision in the UK.
“I decided I didn’t want to spend the rest of my life working a job that made me unhappy, so took the advice I give to my kids and decided to pursue something I am passionate about,” Raj said. “I have always loved news and want to be a voice for those who feel unheard and unseen, telling the stories of communities that often get overlooked while holding people to account where needed.”
Despite starting the course without any previous journalism training, Raj believes she is now prepared for success in her new career, having quickly developed knowledge and expertise thanks to the skills-focused nature of her studies. The support received from her lecturers was also key in helping her focus on her studies while juggling the challenges of being a single parent.
“The practical elements of the MA drew me towards Leeds Trinity, and I feel they have given me an extra edge and the confidence I needed to set me apart from other candidates going for the same jobs and opportunities,” Raj said. “The placements were invaluable – they are where you can make connections and leave an impression on industry professionals while gaining experience of the jobs that you will be doing after graduating.
“It was a huge challenge, but I was determined to push myself and make it all count, especially for my kids,” Raj added. “The University, especially my lecturers, went above and beyond to consider my personal circumstances as a single parent with no family or coparent to help me. I also have an incredible network of friends who supported me when I needed it. I will be forever grateful to all of them.”
As she graduates with a Distinction and with a job as a Production Journalist at ITV News secured, Raj – who recently returned to Leeds Trinity to inspire current students during the University’s annual Journalism and Media Week – has the following advice for students hoping to follow in her footsteps: “Employers want to see what you can do in the real world, not just what you’re capable of academically. So, with any spare time you’ve got, instead of doom-scrolling, use it to practice your skills. Those extra efforts shine through when you’re in the workplace. It can seem difficult and uncomfortable at the time, but you’ll thank yourself for it for the rest of your life.”
Katherine Blair, Associate Professor in Professional Practice in Journalism at Leeds Trinity University, said: “Raj was one of the most hard-working students I’ve ever taught - she somehow managed to balance single parenting with a job and a full time MA. As a student, she took every opportunity to learn and has impressed her new colleagues with her enthusiasm and ability to identify with audiences, and she has more than earned her place in television news. She has a bright future ahead and I have no doubt she’ll be running a newsroom sometime in the near future.”
